The Strike Sugar Movement starts tomorrow…Are you In?

As a follower of this blog you probably have heard me mention Tosca Reno author of The Eat Clean Diet and all around phenomenal woman.  (Yes I have a straight woman crush on her, what of it!) . For the month of September she is having a Strike Sugar Challenge. This means NO SUGAR (the white refined kind that is). If you can get some suga from a cutie you met at the pub, go for it and let’s hope he goes right for the thighs!

I’ve decided to join the Strike Sugar Movement because I really need to kick my chocolate covered blueberries habit, bad day or a good day I can eat a whole bag of these tasty delights, which negates all my efforts at the gym and in Muay Thai class.

I am daring YOU to take the Strike Sugar challenge with me. For the month of September NO Sugar, that means no Timbits, ice cream, chocolate blueberries, gum, soda, muffins, cakes, donuts etc … If you have to question whether something has sugar in it; it probably does so don’t eat it.

Get as many friends as you can to join the Strike Sugar Movement with you, share your tips with us and we will do the same. Summer is over, time to get back on track with the healthy habits. No excuses!

Good Luck and remember you’re not alone!

Do you need to break up with your food?

This blog post is probably not going to help my single status but I think this is something that needs to be shared. In the past couple of years I have developed food intolerances.

Food intolerance – Occur when the body is unable to deal with a certain type of foodstuff. This is usually because the body doesn’t produce enough of the particular chemical or enzyme that’s needed for digestion of that food.

My definition of a food intolerance would be uncontrollable passing of gas. Stomach bloating so bad that people will ask ‘So when are you due?’ thinking that you’re ready to give birth that second. Stomach cramps that have you doubled over in pain and praying that you will let rip the mother of all farts in hope of alleviating some of the pain. You smell like you’re a rotting on the inside. Granted anything coming out of your ass generally does not smell good but if you are having a reaction to your food it’s like rotten garbage sitting in the sun for weeks on end. Weight gain, some people are lucky and experience weigh loss but not this gal! You go from extreme bouts of constipation to 20 minutes bathroom sprints for a day maybe two. The bathroom sprints make you happy you are having a movement but by trip number 3 you begin to wonder just how full of shit you really are.

Two years back I was in my night school class studying Nutritional Symptomology when we started discussing the difference between food allergies and intolerances. As the teacher was going through the symptoms of an intolerance I realized he was talking about my issues. Finally it made sense, but the big question now was what am I intolerant to?

One way to find out if you have intolerances is to do an elimination diet. Eliminate the following foods Eggs, Dairy (includes cheese, yogurt, butter, chocolate), Soy, nuts, wheat and sweeteners; since they are the biggest culprits for food allergies and intolerances. Then slowly add them back into your diet and see if you have symptoms, remember you do not get an immediate reaction, you may feel symptoms the next day or even two days later.

Or you can visit a naturopath and get a get a blood test that specifically tests for food intolerances. Our doctors test for allergies not intolerances. This blood test can be costly but it’s a quick way to see what your issue are. This is the route that I went and I found out that I am intolerant to dairy, eggs, corn, kidney beans, almonds, and brewer’s yeast. I’m not gonna lie I shed a tear over this because this was going to change my life. Brewer’s yeast I love a cold beer on the patio in the summer sun with friends, DAIRY can anyone live without it!

When I eliminated these foods I felt great, got my will to live back (okay I’m just being dramatic) but I did feel like a new person. I even noticed that my skin looked better, I had more energy and my mood did not fluctuate. Hey when you are not walking around like a 9 month pregnant women waiting for the mother of all farts to be released; you are going to feel nothing but happy thoughts.

However I have relapsed, I am back to where I started and I feel awful. It’s hard when you’re single and a big part of your social life is having dinners and drinks with the girls every month, in the summer it’s about every two weeks. So YES I relapsed somewhere between the beers, poutine and nachos I hit rock bottom. I need to break up with my food once again. I know some of my friends find it hard to believe that beer and cheese  are my issues but it’s the sad cold truth. I also know it is hard to understand until you go through it. As much as I love those things I HAVE to give them up! It’s for my health and well-being.

On the plus side I will lose the extra weight I have gained, my skin will glow, I will not look preggo and no longer will I be spewing toxic fumes from my ass. It all good! I’ll miss my cheese and beer but I will get over it, they are not things I have every day and I can switch to wine right?

If any of this resonates with you I highly recommend you take the next step and get tested for food intolerances. Remember when you start feeling better still avoid those foods, because the symptoms will come back. Sadly when we are feeling good we forget what is was like when we weren’t feeling so great. Maybe take a picture of your bloated, pimply self and stick it on the fridge as a reminder and motivation.

Good Luck and remember you are not alone!

Italian sun-dried tomatoes…What do I do with them?

Back in April I went to Italy and the tomatoes all tasted like they were fresh from the garden. Queen B and I had Bruschetta with every meal to ensure that we got some Italian tomatoes. Since I’m not allowed to bring back fresh produce I purchased a bag of sun-dried tomatoes but I have no idea what to do with them.

I’m hoping that my interweb peeps will be able to give me suggestions on how these ruby gems should be used. Remember I am the girl who was told to marry rich because of my lack of apparent domestic skills, therefore recipes need to be easy and fire proof.

Peanut Butter Protein Balls …I did them my way

I am on a quest for healthy snack ideas and I need to work on item #47 of my list; so yesterday I picked up Abs Oxygen Magazine Collector’s issue. Oxygen Magazine is my favorite fitness mag., I think it gives good practical exercise and nutritional advice for all levels of fitness.  I also dream of one day being published in Oxygen as to how or why they would have me is still yet to be determined in my head.

Now back to the healthy snack quest, I did find a recipe that I thought would curb my cravings for something sweet or the between meals hunger pangs that I sometimes get.

This is a pic of the actual recipe in the magazine:

Here are the changes that I made:

1 cup prunes

½ cup warm water

¼ cup organic Peanut butter

1 cup 100% CFM Whey Protein Isolate powder unflavored

¼  ground flaxseed

¼ tsp cinnamon

1/8 sea salt

½ cup dried blueberries

½ cup Organic unsweetened coconut

Dark chocolate shavings

The dough will be too sticky to work with, I think it’s because of the oil in the organic peanut butter so you will have to put in the freezer  for 20 minutes to chill, then you can roll into balls. I rolled my balls in part flaxseed, part coconut and chocolate shavings.

My Balls:

The recipe states that you can make 38 balls; but I only got 24 out of my batch. Also my balls do not look as pretty as the ones in the magazine but they sure are tasty!

I think this weekend I will also try the Seared Steak & Swiss Chard with Harissa on pg.56  it looks delish. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Tiramisu, fresh pasta with Bolognese sauce made Florence Style

Item #45 – Take a cooking class for a different type of cuisine has been scratch off my list.

In grade 8 I was told to marry rich by my home education teacher after I had spilled milk all over her and started a small oven fire. (I was an awkward preteen in the middle of a growth spurt so I was not very coordinated) Any desire for cooking that I may have had, dwindled that day.

On April 27, 2012 while in Florence I took the ‘I Wanna Be Italiano Cooking Class’ with Chef Giovanni. Not only did I learn how to make pasta from scratch but gained a passion for wanting to learn to cook.

The class started off with a tour of a local food market in Florence, here we purchased the ingredients needed for our cooking lesson. Purchases in hand we head back to the Florence Wine and Food Academy, put on our aprons and got down to business. First on the Agenda was Tiramisu in individual dessert dishes.

This tasty dessert was rather easy to make and YES is does taste as good as it looks.

Next on the agenda was pasta and ravioli from scratch without the aid of a pasta machine. This was old school pasta making with your hands and a rolling-pin. Whoever said making pasta from scratch is easy, has obviously been doing it since birth. It seems simple enough with the only ingredients being flour, eggs and a little olive oil but don’t be fooled there is a skill involved here. It took me 20 minutes of muscle power and a bit of sweat to roll out my pasta dough. If anyone ever makes you fresh pasta be very grateful, because they must really like you. If you have not tasted fresh pasta you must, you will never go back to boxed pasta again.

Once our pasta was made it was time to prepare our Bolognese sauce, I love sauces so I was super excited. Here is everything you need to make an amazing Bolognese.

Plus Olive Oil, red wine and tomatoes and your sauce will look like this:

Now we are ready to eat..The finished product

For the Ravioli we made a butter and sage sauce which exactly as the name implies it is melted butter and sage, extremely simple and delish.

The Bolognese Sauce Recipe:

800g  tinned peeled tomatoes

500g ground beef 500g fresh ground pork sausage

1 cup San Giovese Chianti wine

½ bottle olive oil

1 carrot

1 celery rib

1 red onion

Heat oil in a 30 cm large non-stick pan and brown he chopped carrot, celery and red onion for 5 minutes. Add the ground  beef and pork sausage and it until it has browned, for about 10 minutes, stirring the sauce constantly (no lid). Pour the wine and boil for 5 minutes. Reduce heat and add tomatoes, salt and simmer over a gentle heat for 40 minutes, stirring occasionally and mashing the tomatoes (no lid)

Please let me know if you try this recipe.

Coors Light Ice T tastes like old man

In March, Molson Coors introduced Coors Light Iced T. Coors Light Iced T (C.L.I.T) promises beer drinkers a light and lively brew, comprising the sweet maltiness of Coors Light – Canada’s favorite light beer – with a blend of natural tea and lemon flavors. My response to this is WHY?!

I’m not sure who Coors had in mind when they made this product, was this to get more girls to drink beer? As a girl who likes to drink beer, Coors light beer to be exact. C.L.I.T  is an epic fail! I tried it this past weekend and it tasted like an old alcoholic man. You know the man who has been drinking for so long that alcohol seeps out of his pores, so in order to hide the smell he doused himself in Aqua Velva. The smell of Aqua Velva is so strong that it singes your nose hairs and gets into your mouth, and even after drinking a gallon of water to can’t get rid of the taste. That is the new flavour that Molson Coors decided was going to win over the ladies, last time I checked we gals do not like the taste of an old drunk!

I admit the ads for C.L.I.T are great, they make it look refreshing, mouth-watering and tasty. It is easy to see why none beer drinkers would be tempted to try C.L.I.T. and there may even be a few beer drinkers that have been converted. However with all the money that Molson Coors spent on advertising C.L.I.T they should have reduced the price of Coors Light; why mess with Canada’s favorite light beer. Beer is beer, if you like you like it, if you don’t you don’t!

Molson Coors if you want to gear more to the female market, why not make you current advertising more female friendly, show some gals at the cottage drinking beers and watching the hot buffed landscapers trimming the bushes. You get the idea!
